Yes it's true Elvis died today in 1977 but even more relevant in my eyes is the fact that Robert Johnson also died today in 1938.

The King's legacy may live on but lets not forget who the real kings were.

Elvis is Great!!! He had a great voice and awesome talent! So what if his personal life was a little messed up, who's isn't! What would people think of you if your every move was documented? I am not saying i agree with every move he made but, who am i to judge? I thought of him yesterday!:king

We have the african americans to thank for all our music. Why? Because they had the strongest emotions which needed a medium to get across to people. They have been for a long time the MUSIC MAKERS. It is all they had to lift their spirits!!! In the face of oppression they rocked and they rolled! But i guess we do have elvis to thank for bringing it to the attention of the stupid white suburban kids...

:: peace all ::

i've been on chill for a while but i thought i'd crawl from under my rock. anyhow, in light of what shabda has mentioned, which i had planned to touch on..but then i changed my mind...but now i decided to post

anyhow, it's coo' that shabda shows appreciation and provides some kind of gratification for Black music as opposed to the many others who take it for granted. no, i'm not talkin' about the conscious and of course i'm not even talking about the sub:conscious. however, i always think it's quite a slap in the face when elvis is recognized as "the king" of rock & roll by so many yet little IF ANY recognition is given to those who paved the way for him such as muddy waters(who to ME IS the king of rock and roll), Fats Domino, Kokomo Arnold..etc

however, the music only becomes recognized when the music is stolen..ahem, excuse me, when the music is 'discovered' by white america...hence the eminems and the justin timberlakes (oh he's soooo cute :-p) i'm not taking it personally. nor am i attacking those who are white. simarly, by no mean am i attempting to discredit elvis by being a 'hater', but let's be clear...he was not the innovator. hell, it's just music. i understand that, but some recognition would be appreciated occasionally. especially when one is 'the king' of music that he did not even innovate, create. because if it was the case...justin would be the king of r&b and eminem would be a fore father of hip-hop.

i don't know about you guys but i find it to be quite entertaining.....you know, the whole elvis thing. let's just have some fun with it. i just never liked his voice and i still don't, but i realize that he had a chance to do what he likes, music and unfortunately becuz he looked white, he was able to achieve success. be happy.....we don't have to feel limited or held back with our creativity anymore becuz of the color of our skin.
from what i understand, elvis was not fully white, he was part native american indian.
on a personal note: i'm tired of the blame and self rigteousness of our young generation, who never had to live in those times, feel that they deserve appreciation or recognition. we live in a time where we have the freedom to express our creativity and succeed. don't get me wrong, definitely know your roots, but don't forget times are always changing. it's what keeps life interesting, the strong shall survive. peace.;)

suont,

so you think that recognition and appreciation isn't necessary? how do you interpret that as "self righteousness"?

btw....I'M not looking for PERSONAL gratification or recognition. i named some artists that should receive recognition...not myself. i don't understand where and how you would assume that I am pursuing credit for something that i've never achieved...(that is if your post was directed to my initial post)

You wanna know what I think? I think its stupid to sit there and be like, I'm crawling out from under my rock, and I've decided to post..." What? Get the hell outta here with that shit! I'm so tired of all this petty nonsense on this board about absolutly nothing! So what if Elvis is viewed by most people as the "King". So what if he is a biter and a stole Forest Gumps style. I could care less. Music is music. So in a sense you are saying that since Eminem is white he has no right to rap and Justin Timberlake's singing R&B is a slap in the face. Come a little closer so this white girl can slap you in the face. WAKE UP!!! I'm so over this racist crap. I listen to hip hop and i love it and and I take offense to any kind of statements when it comes to race and music. In Japan how many black people are there.... umm not many, but they fucking love hip hop. You make no sense yo! Go back under that bolder.
