Yeah, I bet everone had the same mentallity I did: $30!!!! :holy shit
Lots of talent, but $30!!! I'm paying for a lot of talent I didn't want to see. I wanted to see maybe 5 of the performers and most of them were local! :)
I missed Egorock and Suont Thurday and so I really wanted to go just to see them perform.
I also wanted to see Vector Burn and Castor spin (haven't see that before either), Gridlock and Stakka I wouldn't have minded seeing but eehhh....and I wanted to see my old friend Joe Bear spin. I haven't seen him spin either. We just used to work together about 5 years ago.
So everyone I really wanted to see was local and will play here again soon. And probably at venues priced lower than $30!!! :) Really the problem is I'm just frickin' poor! :raging

I went specifically to hear Gridlock and Stakka. Gridlock wasn't really what I expected. Don't get me wrong, I like Gridlock alot and play "The Terrorist " on technorganic like evryday! HA! Buuuuuuut his mixing was a little shakey and I just wasn't really feelin it. Stakka on the other hand was wicked! His mixing was tight and I liked his programing. What was the first tune he played?
I had to leave after their sets because I drove up there alone and I didn't want to drive back to Tucson and fall asleep at the wheel! It was good to meet a couple of you from this message board and it was good to see all of you phx heads that I rarely ever see!
Now its time for all of you to come down to Tucson!!!!:monkey

I got to the venue pretty early to hang up sub:con posters and other propoganda. I heard Tizzer first in the jungle room - he was dj'ing fine, but hearing all those hard tracks so early in the night wasn't doing much for me. The sound system consisted of 4 yorkville bassbins and 2 tops... aka, the same sound at Lucky Dragon. I was expecting a bit more sound than what I hear at a weekly.
I haven't been out to a party in a really long time, let alone stay at one all night. I'm finding it very difficult to be among all the e-tards these days. There was a time when I saw so much of the behavior at raves as "normal", but now I just freak out at how gak'ed out most of the people there are. I'm really looking forward to the dnb scene in Phoenix getting large enough to be seperate from raves. Raves have really run their course in this state.
Vector Burn dropped tons of original tracks, most of which hit very well. I just wish more people were there to witness that.
Egorock & Suont (played in another room) had an awesome set. Very much like what they did last week at sub:con, but much harder. Suont's vocals were on point at she had a lot of people amazed. Ego's track selection got into all kinds of ghetto funk - really positive/fun feelin' throughout his wholet set.
Gridlock... eh... something wasn't right. I dunno if he was on something, or if that's how he always mixes. At least we got to hear a few unknown tunes.
Stakka.... bad mon! He kept it real: aggressive drum and bass, not too much "teknoid" stuff. Some of those dubs he dropped were so heavy. I don't think the programming was phenomenal, but most of the tracks played were fun to hear.
Castor proved that he is defintely onto his own thing. His set really stood out from everything played last night as an example of just how fast dnb is moving in different directions. My only complaint is that some of the dubs played of that newer, trance/minimal techo style really have weak snares. The bulk of the track would hit hard, but the snare would be a tiny little 'pfft'. I'm pretty sure Stakka took notice that there is some original/new stuff going on down here.
DFT... I didn't catch all of his set, as I was talking to a lot of people at the time. But without a doubt, he had more people moving than anyone the whole night... serious vibe developed around that time. Saw all kinds of ravers/candykdis getting down.
Zero... Good stuff all 'round. Highlight of his set was when Suont came in and started singing over it. The really hard dnb with her vocals made for an interesting atmosphere. Especially before the drops when it would be nothing but her voice.
During the last hour of the show, I walked around the rest of the venue to check out the other rooms/crowds... I can say without hesitation that the dnb room was the last one to really be vibing. Shouts to the locals that proved we do having something to be proud of in this town.

I had a decent night. For the biggest rave of the year I didnt think it was up to par. Just my opinion. This is what I heard when I first came in:
Gridlock- His mixing was horrid. Worst out of the bunch. A few tight tracks but so so...
Adam and Misty rocked it! Playing alittle harder stuff then usual cause we are in a rave and people expect rough drum and bass, I suppose. But 12' flares going on
:lighter
Stakka- Played alot of hard edge and trancy stuff. Nothing of notice from his lables past or present that i heard. I was disappointed he didnt play the stuff I thought I would hear. The frist track was killer though.
Castor/Dave I thought did good jobs and were on point more then any of the others.
Owens set was the best imo. It was a good mood for that time of the night. Dark vocals. When Misty came on it was over with. Really good showing.
So yeah in the end if your a drum and bass fanatic no sense in paying all that money to see Stakka(but I enjoyed), when you can see the locals do just as well if not better, in some instances. So support your local scene!
