I always notice the technobabble that goes on... and the sql references... just wondering what sql/mysql is...

and as far as programing goes... what does it mean to 'compile' something...?

first of all, "1337" and all that comes with that stereotype is never mentioned among most programmers. :fu

SQL (pronounced like sequal) stands for Structured Query Language, a standard interface to relational database systems. It not a programming language, just a simple way of fetching and modifying data from a database:

SELECT * FROM customers WHERE firstname = "robert";

That SQL statement would return all the rows from a table named "customers" if their first name matched "robert".

MySQL (proncounced My S. Q. L. ) is an open source database server that runs on every major operating system.

"compile" means to turn programming code (which is a set of instructions written in ascii text, easy for people to read) into binary exectuable code (the way the computer likes to run it). Its the equivilent of "cooking" in a kitchen: process the ingredients to create the final product.

back in the bbs days, you were only one of three things: lamer, leech, leet

I went thru all phases. My lamer phase was so bad, I had to change my handle.

if you were a girl on a bbs you got sysop status simply because you were NOT a geeky male.

what were some of the oldskool bbs software people remember?
(not actually boards)

oblivion/2 was big by the time i was getting out of the bbs 'scene' -- i ran a customized version of a rare package called Quiver where the art was all done by ACiD.. but i went through everything from maximus, to LiQUiD, to pcboard..

what was amigas really big one.. i cant remember the name.. was it evolution?

mmm memories of oldskool bbs'.. thank god they still exist on telnets all around the globe :)

i think i was grounded at least 12 times for my long distance phone bills to bbs' everywhere.. and had SNET show up at my door on two occasions for a 3rd party billing exploit we found.. woo thank god we moved.

BBS-PC was the solid Amiga system for a long time... after 91, I stopped paying attention. Most good Amiga focused boards would run Wildcat on a PC anyway.

Anyone in Phoenix remember the Generic BBS / Switchbaud? It was the only way you could connect to a bbs in Tempe from North Phoenix without being charged long distance.
