Get a motherboard with NForce2 on it, and as far as proc, I guess its up to what you need. I know AMD's Athlon's are still affordable & just as fast as P4's, but they did just release a budget version of their 64bit chip.

Also, 200 gig drives kick ass, just make sure you get one with 8mb cache.

As far as brands are concerned, I personally like MSI the best, most techs reccomend them, had nothing but problems with soyo's. ASUS is suppodt to be decent as well. An athlon board and processor is going to be cheaper, but you will need a good fan.

Mesh -- MAn those MsI's Look pretty damn sweet :)

what is the difference between an Via and Nforce2 chipset?

What advise ya' have on RAM--Kingston or Mushkin?
do I really need to spend serious money on ram...

anyways here's the MOBO (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-445&catalog=22&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1)
I am considering...:) and the CPU (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-377&catalog=343&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1)

1. Via chipsets are garbage when compared to NForce2
2. Abit has in the past made very reliable motherboards
3. The Abit board can handle 3gigs of ram against the MSI's measly 2 gigs
4. The Abit board supports Firewire, the MSI board does not

Mesh

Yeah you could put 3 gigs of ram on a abit board, but the person wants to spend under 500 bucks, probly including the monitor... 512 ram is proper for most peeps, usually more than enough...

Kingston "ValueRam is really good stuff, and you should be able to get 512 for under 100 bucks.

Make sure you buy a good power supply, thats important, enermax is a good brand, 400 watts and over are good for just about anything.

i know this might confuse the subject and isn't the most cost effective RAM but through my semi-thorough research, I chose to buy corsair ram, it had very low latency (higher speed) and came highly recommended. I bought all my stuff off newegg.com (cpud provided a link)...They shipped quickly without charging an arm and a foot and their prices were very reasonable, plus they have a large selection...good luck homes

ok I decided not to shop on line - I am going to Papitas(FRys) Electronics instead, this amount of responses gave me a good
idea of what I should look for. Thank you all :)

one more question - can ya tell me the SPECS of your systems, Cpu, Mobo, Ram... and what is your most common use for the system(music, movies, games, crap, goatporn, ect...). xiao

Music choice is COX digital cables digital music channel. There are about 45 diffrent digital channels, all close to cd quality and of differing genres. Heard KOOP on the "electronica" channel channel 915 here in phoenix. The track was from "waltz for KOOP". Musichoice is used nationwide by cox.... Is there a wesite where i can purchase the album, mayby amazon.com or some shit? One more question, obviously you promote for koop, who are these guys, I want to get a idea of them.

yeah dont buy those via chipsets i had a major problem with them before with doing audio stuff.. it would pop and click like crazies

i bet they fixed that problem now but i dunno bout em :o

so now im using a prebuilt sony computer and an echo gina sound card and that cured my problems.... shrug i think its just easier to get a prebuilt computer cos im no computer tech dood.

cos then i dont have to worry about building my computer properly , computer noises (my amd sounds like a lawn mower) , i dont have to worry about any werid conflicts, and you get a neat little case that says Sony VaiO... oh and you also get a legit version of windows xp if you wanna be legit ...

Mesh

Technically since the mobo is new, you shouldent need and additional controller card.(for some older mobo you needed them) to control the big ass drives. Freind of mine at work bought two 250 gig just drives just last week, if you give me till saturday night I can give you instructions on what to do.

P.s. What brand?

IonSant
01-09-2004, 02:57 PM
well the mobo is around 5 years old -
the HDD brand is Western Digital-

Consumer

it sounded good, but I just now read this - how about tommorow as in saturday?

IonSant

ok

Consumer

just read about the 5 year old mobo... you'll probably need a newer one to support the large drives.

IonSant
01-09-2004, 06:19 PM
ok

Mesh
01-10-2004, 01:01 AM
yeah, if the mobo is 5 years old, it may not support a bigass drive like that..... Ill still talk to that dude at my work, because his mobo is like 4 years old and he has 2 new 250 gig drive as well as a 80 gig drive...
