View Full Version : Experimentation

I have to admit, I miss some of the old skool experimentation. People were doing new things with drums and sub bass such as wild snare rushes with changing pitches and time expand effects. Now a days everyone has gone along the typical tech step route where the most experimentation they go is putting the reverb before the distortion or adding trance like gate effects etc. I've found most of my fix in the IDM community but too much of it is turning synthetically granular :crackhead and resists dancefloors. Anyways I was curious who else in Arizona isn't following the Bad Company or Stratus top40 dnb route as far as drum n bass production goes.... or whether or not I've just turned into a jaded grumpy old man.

exactly what I was thinking............that is why I have gone the way of the producer and am gonna bring back the ol skool sound...........if you REALLY want to find the underground sound hit me up John(i think that is your name, we met a long time ago)
now if people would just let me play my shit out here.................just because you won't play what a certain promoter wants to hear or you won't kiss his ass and try to act like your his friend you can't play out.... Bullshit!!!!! oops!, sorry for that spout off.......
p.s. I have met only a few people in this scene that actually respect what I'm trying to do and not act like this is fucking high school!!!!!!!!

U-OME, we'd like to work you into playing a sub:con night, but shit is booked until the end of July. Your last mix cd and commitment to supporting our night has not gone unnoticed.

As for experimental, we just has Reed Richards (kofi) play another opening set for us last week that consisted of some gritty idm at the end. I started my set off with choppy, neurofunk, minimal style dnb and to my suprise, had people dancing to it.

I'm still wondering how Aphex's 'cymru beats' would go down in a set.

I'm not exactly saying we should try to recreate the old school sound because that would defeat the purpose of experimentation, but I think we should try to recreate the old school mentatlity as if drum and bass were new to us once again, what if you couldn't label types of drum and bass as tek or ambient or sounds like so and so on the label such and such....

There are maybe 800 distinguished drum and bass scientists that have been studying bass and drums individually for years now.. think about the outcome.

btw 64 cymru beats is ace.

I think what helps dnb producers most is not being so influenced by other dnb tracks... listening to a wide range of music and trying to bring that influence to the table is where new ideas come from.

of course originality should be the main key in anyones tunes, i didn't mean to copy a sound just cause it is what i grew up on, i meant that certain new sounds should always be used especially when it makes this music new and exciting again........

Ana, yes I saw Kim (Access) play at Sub con a few weeks ago. Nice venue.

About 54 Cymru Beats.... nothing compares to seeing Aphex Twin actually play it on stage live (All tomarrow parties at UCLA anyone?). He played that along with Mt Saint etc and Taking over the Drum machine from the drukqs.

U-OME, i can't wait to hear your experimentalism mixed with old schoolism, drop me and address where I can listen to your tracks...

Speaking of which, if there are any ballsy producers out there, i'd love to write some IDMish stuff with them...

I like the idea of experimenting more in DnB. I try to do it often whenever i produce. And John, i've heard a few of your tracks that Cleansweep played for me. Good stuff all around.

It's difficult to try and create your own sound as a "unknown" or "new" producer, because people tend to compare you or classify you into one genre...it frustrates me all the time.

Yo, experimentation is the shiiizzzz....

Although I honestly have to say I'm a little frighten to post any tracks that aren't close the tech step beat. I feel if I don't have a snare on every on beat I'll be crucified. I mean it seems like the scene it currently saturated with this genre of DnB. The 1(bass). 2(snare). 3 and half(bass). 4(snare). or some slight variation. Usually I like the melodies or dark sounds though.

But I do admit I've heard some wicked Jungle sets recently! THANKS PREECHA! :)

And Acid.....that track was dope! I'm listening to it NOW!
