www.phoenixnewtimes.com | originally published: March 25, 2004

It's every Thursday at the PI aka Bostons, Price and Baseline. They've got break-dancers, The best underground Hip Hop/Neo-Soul/Orig. Breaks, and big, cheap-ass beers." Turns out the Blunt Club is a sucka-free Thursday night event brought to you by graf-artist gone legal/urban-renaissance man Dumperfoo. He's one of the art rebels behind Wet Paint's "Final Fridays," as well as numerous other happenings in Tempe and beyond. The Blunt boasts talents like "verbal taxidermist" Emerg McVay. There's poetry, turntable virtuosity from DJs like Dj Element,Tricky T & Hyder, break-dancing from troupes such as the Phunky Phoenicians, Furious Styles, and a dressed-down, laid-back crowd that can best be described as "anti-Scottsdale." Seems like everyone's an artist, a poet, or a performer doing their best to blow down doors with their creativity.....

The Blunt Club Is Hosted By Emerge Mc Vay (Bionic Jive) and Dumperfoo (Blow Up Co-Op | Wet Paint). Dj's Element One, Tricky T, Hyder - On The Floor Phunky Phoenicians, Furious Styles Crew, Johnny Castro, Future Styles & Guest B-Boys ¦ B-Girls weekly 21& Over, 8-1am Drink Specials. • "PI" N.W. Antedote "The Neato Project" (Phoenix Arizona) - Antedote the Neato Project was formed in the beginning of 2003 as a remedy to the music dying before them. Comprised of five schooled musicians, their music is an organic blend of jazz, hip-hop and experimental drum’n’bass. Hard hitting but completely relaxed, Antedote pounds tough issues over soothing rhythms. Their topics range from braggadocios poetry in Jazz Ain’t Dead to social awareness with Fly Joints and Antedote. Hailing from Phoenix, AZ this quintet has made some serious noise in the hip-hop underworld with their word of mouth must see live show. The experience is very unique with both guitarist and bassist playing keyboards at the same time as their stringed instruments. Along side with percussion the rhythm section is unlike no other with an emcee in total control they push even further with artist like Alpha Monsters | Dumperfoo painting live on stage..

Resident Vinyl Elements DJs: Red Sonya, SkuTech, Knotty Boy, Jersan The VE crew is looking forward to playing our usual variety of styles (house, u/g hip hop, breaks, dnb, funk, electro, etc) for da masses.

Movimiento Popular translates literally to ‘popular movement’ which in Latin American countries means a grass-roots movement of or supported by the people. It is this attitude that best sums up the last few years of Grupo Fantasma’s impressive existence. The band has avoided categorization and trends to become a completely independent musical force with which to be reckoned. Their first eponymous self-released album moved over 7,000 copies from the stage alone and landed them on internationally distributed compilations, a NPR special, and the soundtrack to critically acclaimed director John Sayles’ film Casa de los Babys. Their explosive live performances have packed some of the most reputable venues in the US and Mexico on word of mouth and industry hype alone, and the band has shared the stage with musical legends such as Los Lobos, Flaco Jimenez, Patti Smith, KRS-One, and Barbarito Torres from Buena Vista Social Club.

Grupo Fantasma’s new album, Movimiento Popular, has been a year in the making. Talks with major and independent labels and producers came and went, but the band opted to continue their methodology of DIY ethics. The importance of complete creative control over their new product was paramount. Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Butthole Surfers) was recruited to engineer, and Carl Thiel (Robert Rodriguez, Kill Bill II) was brought in to handle the mixing process. Special guest artists featured on the album include Raga El, who introduces the band in classic dancehall style, Tejano music legend Ruben Ramos (Los Super Seven), and DMC champion DJ Baby G, who contributed to a track on Fantasma’s first album.

The spectrum of sounds on Movimiento Popular highlight Spanish language vocals and four piece horns anchored by a dynamic percussion and rhythm section. From the jarring new-school cumbia opener “Peligrosa” to the Fania-esque salsa of “Vida Guerra” to the classic Tejano feel of “Soy el Hombre,” Grupo Fantasma represents a new generation of musicians who can reference slick Quincy Jones era production AND the grittiness of the Beastie Boys’ “Check Your Head.” The band has successfully busted all barriers and cliches that often plague the current Latin music market, all the while keeping their feet firmly planted in the traditions that they respect and revere.

2004 represents an important year in Grupo Fantasma’s career and musical evolution. They will tour heavily in support of the new album, bringing their sound to punk rock dives, world music venues, festivals, colleges and almost everywhere in between. So, be on the lookout for Grupo Fantasma invading your town!
